Hidehiko Inagaki is a graduate student in biology at the Caltech. His main interest is in how the emotions are represented in the brain. As a model system, he studies the neural circuitry basis of hunger in flies. In addition, his thesis is focused on developing novel methods to visualize and control chemical circuits in the brains, which have important roles in the control of emotions. As an undergraduate researcher at the University of Tokyo, Hidehiko worked in various research areas including cancer, bioinformatics, development neuroscience, and fly behaviors. At Caltech, he works with Professor David J. Anderson. He also used to work in a scuba diving shop, where he was fascinated and interested in variety of innate behaviors animals exhibit under the sea.
Ketaki Panse is a third year undergraduate majoring in neurobiology at Caltech. Ketaki is working in the lab of Professor David Anderson, studying which neuromodulators are responsible for feeding and searching behavior in fruit flies. Interested in both the sciences and the humanities, Ketaki also plans to major in English. Her interests include epigenetics and surrealist art.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
On January 18, 2013, Caltech hosted TEDxCaltech: The Brain, a forward-looking celebration of humankind's quest to understand the brain, by exploring the past, present and future of neuroscience. Visit TEDxCaltech.com for more details.

A scientist should be willing to experience personally any experiment he inflicts on other sentient beings.

We should all just try to be a little bit more like the great Ketaki.. but maybe without the starving of innocent fruit flies.

This is an essential video for people like Sarah Palin to watch, so she can learn the importance of the humble fruit fly to science :)
