During the recent flood in North Georgia / Metro Atlanta, My Dad's flatbed trailer was completely submerged under deep, muddy water for an extended time. The brakes, bearings, and electrical connections were damaged and / or corroded. This video shows how to clean and repack the wheel bearings. Hopefully, soon I'll upload the video of all I did to the front axle, trailer brakes, etc.

  • Can I use wd40 to clean the bearing?

  • @SuperHamiltor It wouldn't be my first choice. I don't know how it reacts with wheel bearing grease & I do know it isn't going to evaporate quickly like brake parts cleaner.

  • Great video. Thanks a lot.

What do you use to clean the bearing before repacking it with grease?

  • @procyonoff Brake parts cleaner works good for cleaning the bearings, drums, spindles, shoes, etc.

  • Excellent information. Thank you.

Are the inner seals standardized in size?

  • @BuhlzI Yes, for that size trailer. I went to a parts store that sold trailer hubs with bearings & seals as an assembly. They got the seal # & sold me what they had in stock. Then I took those new seals to 2 more stores & had them sell me the seals they had that cross referenced that #.

  • @SuperHamiltor

WD40 is not a cleaner. You would be doing this job again soon.

  • Don't you have to tork the nut when you put it back on?

  • Thanks for the info. Repacking my northern tool trailer and this video really helped. Keep up the good work.

  • Better video than some others..! I especially liked the trick with the ramps...! I have a 7k trailer with 2 axles. Time saver with the ramps. Would have used a rubber hammer for the seal and bearing cap, not the 12oz claw.... The $15 bearing packing tool is a must. Hope the job of repacking all 4 hubs didn't take 4 days... Thanks for the tips...

  • Please use a proper seal driver next time. I've seen this method used so many times and yes it does damage the seal if you're not careful. BTW, you're absolutely correct about using Brake parts cleaner, it's the best. Also, you didn't show nor mention, you did clean the hub too?

  • No need to put any solvents on the bearings to clean them. It's best not to. Just wipe off the excess old grease then roll the roller bearings on a clean paper towel or cotton towel.

  • I've been putting off servicing my trailers' bearings now for six years. Thanks to your vid, I'm gonna go do it now.

  • @SuperHamiltor NOOOO y would u use a lubracant to clean out another lubercant

  • @procyonoff paint thinner works
