Why can't you just watch the video and pay your respects without trying to justify singing the billy boys, always some knuckle dragger that has to ruin it,rip to both players who where fantastic players.
I always felt Scottish football missed a trick when Jinky died. Here was a great chance to have a legends match between Celtic and Rangers - Jinky's XI v Coops XI - with the green & white hoops and the royal blue being worn by respective teams - and jerseys swapped at the end. A chance for Scottish football to break the cycle of hatred. A day when the nutters wouldn't come and families would. A new generation saying "it's just a game". What a game that might have been. Life changing in fact. RIP
@djsteeley What are you on about? Supporting Rangers is just that, it's supporting a football club. In no way does everything about it stand for any sort of "nationalism" (I believe the term you're looking for here is unionism). Back to the matter at hand, you've chosen a sectarian term as a tag, I thought it'd be a nice gesture to delete it. Apparently you disagree. And I don't care if you're a 'hun', it's still sectarian and using it to depict a club's supporters is not OK.
Last word on me on this subject - you deplore Nationalism, yet surely Rangers stand for everything that is connected with Nationalism & a United kingdom?
Rangers FC have pleaded with the moronic crowd to stop singing the Billy Boys, yet they continue , how is that supporting the club?
@djsteeley I don't care how you interpret the lyrics. It's about a Rangers gang against a Celtic gang. Celtic are a club rife with fenianism (which is an ideology I dislike, just like other forms of nationalism). That's the context, nothing sectarian. UEFA even had a look at it, but found it to be passable. However, the whinging bhoys can be persistent in these sorts of things, so UEFA decided to rule against their own decision.
Now, to get back to 'hun'. It is a sectarian term and that's that.
@Kkardemumma - I'm sorry but it is all semantics on your part - the man on the street is perfectly aware of the word "fenian" in a political sense, however, we all know the context in which it is used in the "Billy Boys" - No wonder Rangers are shaking their heads on this issue , the knuckle draggers just continue to shame a great club.
If Rangers FC don't want you singing it, why persist?
The Sash is a Protestant folk song, or using derogative terms a hun song. No matter how lovely I might find it (and I do find it quite nice) it's not a football song.
I don't sing otherwise either, because I'm not an orangeman, not even a hun. The Billy Boys is, however, a football song. 'Knees' isn't a sectarian term, 'fenian' isn't, nor is 'blood' or 'surrender'. So I don't see what's sectarian about it.
@Kkardemumma - Don't follow your logic , the Billy Boys include the lyric 'Up to the knees in fenian blood, surrender or you'll die"?? Which part of that is not sectarian
Try singing that song on Sauchiehall or better still London Road, Barrowfield & see if you get arrested. Conversely "The Sash" is not sectarian
It's time for the "minority" to drop the Billy Boys and not same a great Club ....
@djsteeley I'm not a 'hun', so I don't feel offended myself, and it is sectarian, it's been deemed a derogative term for Protestant. So if you plan on keeping 'hun' as a tag you should think of adding a Catholic equivalent ('taig' is probably the most frequently used one). There's nothing bigoted in the Billy Boys. If you were to say FTP or stuff like that I'd agree, that's sectarian and I never say it. I like to stay out of the bigotry. But Billy Boys is just a great football song.
If you want to talk "Sectarian" let me direct you to your own collection of videos - especially the "Billy Boys" Why Rangers fans can't just sing great songs like Follow Follow baffles me, instead of dragging themselves into the gutter - A great Club being spoiled by not so great fans (albeit a minority)
