@ZapposGear I think you've been misinformed. Nobody wears matumbos for triathlons. Triathlons are run on roads, where the matumbos would be an awful choice since they have a plastic spike plate. The hole might help get the shoe on and off, but not for swim or bike to run transitions. The main reason for the hole is that they took the heel counter out and replaced it with the lightest thing possible--nothing. It also locks the foot in place to prevent heel slippage.
