@guiltybystander77 From what I've heard, lyres were often accompagnied by a vocal performance, but I don't know if that is the case with the Egyptian variety.

Michael, this was very beautyful. Please keep on playing for the benefit of your surroundings.

@Klezfiddle1 - If anything I'd argue that the early Semitic (not the early heavy Egyptian) lyre had more sustain than the very early harp (because you could play "loud/resonant music" on the kinnor and nevel, both lyres so far as we know) and that likely explains why the true harp disappeared from the Levant between ca. 1500 BC and Hellenistic times. The lyre was simply a better ensemble/accompaniment instrument for the music then and there current. Old harps were very soft, as you now know! :)

@Hikk0 - the kinnor of the Temple in Jerusalem was played with a plectrum (says Josephus) but we see David playing it with the hand (fingers) too in Saul's court. We see illustrations of the kinnor and related lyres played both ways by different people at different times and places in history.

@Anisiola You may wish to contact Nicholas Brass, who makes replica ancient Greek musical instruments - there is a link to his Myspace page in the "Blog" section of my website, at the end of my blog entitled "How To Acquire a Lyre".

how old is it?
JuliusAnudasson 1 year ago
@JuliusAnudasson This arrangement for solo lyre, is based on a traditional Egytian folk song from Port Said, "One Day We Blamed Eachother". However, the lyre on which it is played is virtually the same as the lyre once played in the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt...some 3500 years ago! A studio quality version of this piece can be heard on track 9 of my album, "Apollo's Lyre" (available from iTunes & Amazon MP3 Store)
