Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted rappelling training from an MV-22 Osprey, 12 March 2010, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The training is part of the Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST) Course conducted by the MEU's Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team 3/8 (BLT 3/8), and Force Reconnaissance Marines. The purpose of HRST training is to provide the ability to insert and extract from areas that may not have a suitable Landing Zone. This can be done via fast rope, rappel or Special Patrol Insert and Extract (SPIE). The three primary insert/extract methods that a certified HRST Master will use in the fleet are fast rope (most common), rappel and SPIE. In each course, all students serve as the HRST Master (individual Marines responsible for conducting the operations in the fleet for their respective units) on all 3 techniques across all Marine Corps helicopter and tilt-rotor aircraft as well as the Navy H-60s. For the MEU, common uses include the Air Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP) platoon, Helicopter Raid Company, Force Recon and Battalion Recon, and snipers.
