Countess Eva von Zeppelin threatened to sue the band over use of the family name. They took the name "The Nobs" after recording engineer Claude Nobs ("funky Claude" from "Smoke on the Water") and also liked the implied double entender since "nob"/"knob" is (I think) Cockney slang for penis.
