When she turns left and right, it's a precaution, for if anyone is watching through the security camera, she doesn't want to alert them to her escape. The viewer for the camera was in that huge room with the glass wall underwater. You could see Catherine wandering around, and now, she tries to make it seem casual as she walks over to the elevator.
She probably destroys the lift so that, if anyone comes checking up on her, they won't be able to find that she has escaped.

They wanted the same woman to play Catherine in Exile as well, but the actress was no longer in the business so they had to get someone else. I can't remember where I read that though.
At least the woman in Exile is better than the voice they used in Revelation. Listening to Catherine's journal in Revelation makes me cringe.
