In March 2007 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London we hosted an evening of animation related events which I took as an opportunity to make some more examples of my Phonographantasmascope, an extension of the Zoetrope principle.

It is all live action and works by using the shutter speed of the camera rather than the rather irritating stroboscope methods other 3D Zoetropes use.

Please excuse my waffling over the top of it, I was speaking for four hours to a constantly revolving set of people.

  • would that only work on a turntable that speed?

  • @01hasa If you change the speed of the disc you'd have to change the amount of images on it so this only works at 45 rpm... Annoyingly changing the amount of images on it changes the amount of space you have for each frame and 45 was the best middle ground.

  • would it still work if you use a naked eye instead of a camera?

  • @01hasa Unfortunately the only way it would work with the naked eye is if you had a stroboscope flashing at the smae speed the camera takes pictures. Or maybe if you hade a tube with slits around it that you looked through although not sure if that would work.... worth a try?

  • Great stuff! I'm sure you told the revolving set of people this several times over.... What shutter speed was it?

  • @cuppacreations The camera's shutter speed is whacked up to about 1/1000 or 1/2000 if that's helpful?

  • @jimlefevre i'm experimenting with camera's and this effect at the moment. i'm using a 7d, but am looking for one that can be left for a whole day (7d turns itself off every 30 mins). what camera did you use?
