Here's some video I shot of two Union Pacific freight trains passing through the Story Street grade crossing in downtown Boone, Iowa, on September 23rd, 2008. Both trains have an SD9043MAC diesel on the point. The engineers really lay on the horn - I learned later on the quiet zone in Boone went into effect only a few days after I was in town. What a shame.

  • What will these people do if the signals malfunction and it's a quiet zone?

  • @benschlechter The trains will sound their horn if there's a known crossing malfunction somewhere. Other than that, the horn is only sounded in an emergency situation - which is just as effective as not sounding the horn at all in my opinoin. By that time it's probably too late anyways.

  • same thing. there installing a quiet zones where i live but there will be more rail

    traffic.

  • I know, doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?
