something like this is easily done with a little Linux script hacking, i partly did this with Linux (specifically VectorLinux Light 5) and SGI made a freeware front end that copies Irix well, and got some of the console working but lacking a Linux-compatible version of FSN (3-D file browser) and being unable to take out the 'frequently used programs' list that shows up when launching an Xterm pretty much halted it
