For me, getting a perfect, authentic pout is an essential part of vintage style. If you look at any picture of a 1940s movie star or pin-up girl, and take away the hair and clothes, they still have a period look, and it's got a lot to do with the shape of their lips! In this video I show you all how I apply my lipstick (in this case I use MAC Ruby Woo) to get that perfect 40s look. I do talk a little, explaining why I do it the way I do, and how to get it spot on. This is a look that works equally well for pinups and glamorous 40s femmes fatales as it does for the girl next door - everyone wore their lips like this in the 1940s! Enjoy!

An accompanying blog post will appear on my blog Diary of a Vintage Girl - http://www.diaryofavintagegirl.com

Thank you to the world-famous director, Steven Dad-berg, for filming this!

My very next video will be the long-awaited victory rolls one :)

  • Quick question - what eyeshadows are you wearing? I've run out of my usual shades from my coastal scents palette and I am loathe to replace the whole thing just for two pots :)

  • @GinPrincess3931 I'm wearing MAC Mylar on the whole lid and Corduroy in the crease! :)

  • very helpful! Could you explain the exact differences between 1930s, 40s and 50s lipshapes? There always seems to be a difference in shapes when you look at fotos or watch old movies, but I just can't point out what exactly is different.

oh and you mentioned Lucille Ball, I recently watched I love lucy and noticed her very overdrawn lips, they seemed to be extremely high in the corners. Was that tipical for the 1950s or was it just her? thanks!

  • @19myself91 I'm not really an expert, I'm afraid! This is a good guide for 20s-40s though!

  • ooh very helpful, thank you.

i just bought 'russian red' - my first mac lippy

  • @missivonmcgowan I like Russian Red and it's not as dry as Ruby Woo - I need to replace my long-ago run out tube!

  • May I ask what foundation you are wearing? I have very fair skin as well and I always have trouble finding the right type and shade.
