Gameplay from Stargilder II by Argonaut Software playing on the Commodore Amiga vintage home computer. Retro Gaming.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • Never played it...reminds me of Interphase...

  • @Cassavius I've never played Interphase, but now thinking I need to :)

  • Cool game! Reminds me of an other polygon amiga jewel called "Guardian".Maybe you also have that in your collection :D !

  • @PrimeAmsterdam Ah, Guardian. I've never actually played that, but I know what it is. A 3D polygon interpretation of Defender.

Interestingly, there was a Defender clone on the BBC Micro called Guardian made by a company called Alligata, and programmed by a guy called Mike Mahoney. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr Mahoney. Very nice chap.

But anyway... I have an adf file of Guardian... I just don't know if it works yet. We'll see :)

  • @SteveBenway I've a feeling that (Amiga) Guardian originated on the CD32, and may or may not have made use of the Akiko chip therein.

  • @MarkTheMorose I remember it being on the CD32 as well, though not so sure about it using the Akiko, as the game is on normal non-Akiko equipped Amigas too.

I guess it could be a cut down version though.

I'm gonna have to dump those adfs onto floppy and give it a try soon, as curiosity is getting the better of me.

  • @SteveBenway you definitely should play interphase :)

  • As exhibitions of Amiga 3D graphics go, this is up there with F29 Retaliator (but it's a more interesting game to play - lots more character (got to love the space whales)). And I remember thinking that Starwing had a similar style. Never knew it was same team though.

I'd be interested to see Birds of Prey, which is also by the same people. Somehow I missed it back then. (And it doesn't seem to be up on youtube.)

  • Did anyone get the purpose of this game?

I never got it either. :)

  • I got this game the same day I got my Amiga 500+, never understood it, used to just fly around shooting stuff and going in the the tunnels till I got bored and flew into the sun to see the cool screen melting effect!

  • Ever fine the Whales in Space?? They were close to the sun I think. Used to love to look for them.

  • Heh, Starglider 3 was also one of the touted launch titles for the ill-fated Konix Multisystem (Argonaut was really excited about that system's 3D capabilities) . . . and one of the 3 engineers from Flare (who designed the multisystem's chipset -and the earlier Flare 1) went on to design the Super FX chip. (I haven't seen actual documentation of the Super FX, but the descriptions I have seen sound suspiciously similar to the RISC "DSP" chip in the Flare 1 and multisystem ;))

  • Big problem with SG2 was that the bolts your ship fired were too damn slow. Combat was really dull as a result. Shame, because the rest of the game was amazing for the time.

  • It's the innovation of the 3D dashboard that I like.
