There's very little doubt that Hans Zimmer's score to Pirates of the Caribbean remains one of the most popular action scores of all time. However, it's most certainly not the only pirate film score ever written. While the film Cutthroat Island was a major financial and critical flop, many film score critics agree that John Debney's score to the film is not only one of the best action/adventure scores of the 90s, it's one of the best and most underrated film scores of all time.

Having owned the complete score and spent many many hours listening to it from start to finish, I completely agree. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that it may just be my favorite single film score of all time. Hans Zimmer's score worked for the film, but I really wish the producers had hired John Debney. There are so many cues that are filled with an indescribable spirit of high adventure.

It really has to be heard from start to finish to appreciate it fully. Influenced by the sounds of Kolberg and Wagner, Debney worked hard with a full orchestra...no electronics to be heard in this score whatsoever. I can listen to it again and again, and it's one of the very few scores that never loses its polish after many listens.

This video was inspired by tolkfan's wonderful video where he put the track "Carriage Chase" into a scene from the first POTC film. Check it out!

Interestingly enough, there was pretty much no editing to the actual video. The musics synchronization to the scene is entirely coincedental. Music is "To the Bottom of the Sea" by John Debney

  • Hi. You are ssoo right in every thing that you say in your description, I could not have put it better myself! After an agonizing wait for years the the complete 2 CD soundtrack was released and I bought it the second that it came out. This is my 2nd favourite soundtrack of all time. For me, it is only beaten, and only just! I should add, by The empire Strikes Back.

  • sooooo cool

  • I also like your Craig Armstrong videos. Did you know he wrote the music for Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio?? look up "balcony scene" by Armstrong. it's quite good
