Using the 3rd channel on my radio, I rigged a servo with a microswitch to turn the lights on and off. I also hooked up a relay to the motor output to simulate brake lights.

The TLU light controller (that comes with many Tamiya TT-01 kits) has an EXT port with 10 pins in it. I buzzed out the pins and found that the first two pins (starting at the power connector) are VCC and GND, and then a control pin corresponding to the light channels 1 through 8. If you ground one of these pins, the channel is turned off. I simply hooked up a small relay that grounds the channel I use for the brake lights when activated.

The relay is rated for 12v, you may have noticed that it switches on a bit late (It works well enough that I haven't bothered droping into an electronics store to pick up a 5v relay). A 5 volt relay should be fine running at the ~7.2 volts that a stick pack/ESC will put out.

I can't claim credit for this relay trick, I found it on this website (and I've seen it at a few other places):
