This tutorial is a follow-up to my video on transcoding .mov files using the Avid DNxHD codec. That method is great, but it doesn't produce AVI files (they're still MOV files) so there are still some slight timeline issues. Also, the Avid DNxHD codec doesn't have an option for videos recorded at 30fps. The Matrox codecs do support 30fps. Additionally, the Matrox codecs produce AVI files which perform the absolute best in Sony Vegas. So, this method trumps the Avid DNxHD method in a couple of ways. However, the Matrox codecs don't work on a Mac; the DNxHD codec does. Both are free; try them and see which works best for you.

  • please help

  • @basketballtuohy not sure how to help. I can tell you though that the latest versions of adobe premiere and sony vegas both edit the .mov files natively without any need to transcode.

  • I keep having the same problem over and over. When I try to convert to avi and the "Encoder error" message shows in the other info column. I have changed the size of my video and have the box checked in the Encoder Options and still it won't work!

if anyone has any help with this I'd highly appreciate it.

  • @MauyMcFearson Wish I could help . . . I really do. We could connect over Yahoo! or Skype if you'd like.

  • uhm, mine only has 50mb per second?

    thanks you either way.

  • @LandScapeProd You gotta be looking in the wrong spot.

  • my issue is it wont preview video even after the steps and it will say it converted video successfully but it wont work if i try to open it.

  • Hello! Thx f sharing! Nice tutorial! It works fine and the results are good. But, in case You don´t need 30fps, the other method w DNxHD is absolutely great. There´s a huge difference btw both! The latitude in contrasts seems to be much bigger w DNxHD! Did Y compare both side to side? So I did Yesterday. And btw: I heard, that the output-footage were 4:2:2. Isn´t that great? And on the other hand, with 10 bit, You get more room for CC without banding-problems. ;-) ( Appreciate response)

  • @basketballtuohy I have the same problem. did u get to fix that problem?

  • @mreae Yeah i have vegas pro 9 but i have this thing when i try to edit with .mov files the preview screen is just black but i found a way to convert to .wmv and the picture doesnt really look different than the original so that will have to make due, thanks for replying so quickly though and good video, it would have been very helpful if it did the trick!

  • I did exactly everything you said but when it converts to .avi it is only audio when i play it back and there is no video...

  • @Rlskateproductions at 4:13 he says to check a box under the conversions tab in the options. Try UNchecking that box instead. I had the same problem you did and after I unchecked that box, it worked. The problem I'm having now is I get no audio in the converted video. Any suggestions?

  • AS i stated before, i have the canon t3i, and i follow your instructions and when i go to convert it there is an encoder problem, can you please get back to me and help me figure this problem out.

  • 'Encoder error, please check your encoder options' ahhh? Im using Windows 7 and my pc is pretty darn new! Runs everything really fast, has anyone found a fix yet?
