Synopsis : Moti (Amitabh Bachchan) sells jaggery at the village market. He collects the raw material and takes them to an older woman, Mahjubi (Nutan), who makes jaggery of a high quality. Moti is in love with a village girl (Padma Khanna), but cannot afford to pay for the 'meher' (a compulsory amount of money given to the bride's family by the groom's family). So, he decides to marry Mahjubi and proposes to her. She accepts his proposal and they marry.

Moti extracts a lot of work from Mahjubi so that he can save enough money to pay for the 'meher' for his real love. Shortly after he saves enough money, he decides to divorce Mahjubi, accusing her of infidelity. He soon marries the village girl and goes back to his business of selling jaggery. But with Mahjubi's skills taken away, will Moti be able to survive on his own? Will his new wife be able to offer him the support and skills in order to enable him to survive in his trade?
