OLD VIDEO (Romanian Press Footage) - Russia and Romania face off for the first DC tie of 2009.
SIBIU, ROMANIA - Romania attempts a feat it has only achieved once in the last six years: advancing past the first round. The fact that the Romanians have a strong and inspirational new captain in Andrei Pavel this year, makes Russia no smaller a hurdle to overcome. Pavel and his team may well have drawn comfort from the fact that they avoided drawing France in the first round for the third consecutive year, but Marat Safin headed the opponents (although Nikolay Davydenko was not present), the tie against Russia was a decidedly steep mountain to climb.
Russia later won the tie, 4-1. They proceeded to the next round, and was beaten by the Israeli team 1-4.
The Russians have won the Davis Cup twice, in 2002 and 2006. Marat Safin was a part of the winning team in both years.
Spain is the winning team this year, defeating Czech Republic, 5-0. 2009 marks the fourth time they have won the Davis Cup.
