I've never had to stand on a SEPTA train before, but the crowd riding the train usually justifies the number of cars they are using at any given time. The exception is late nights, when not a lot of people ride it.
I'm guessing that this is an R5 coming from Paoli/Malvern/Thorndale rather than an R5 coming from Lansdale/Doylestown because the locomotive is in the back. It's my understanding that the locomotives are on the traditional Pennsylvania side of the train.
It was indeed coming from Paoli, because it was on the "outbound to Doylestown" track, even though 30th Street was its last stop. I have taken an afternoon R5 Paoli express before (I have video of it arriving at 30th Street) and the engine is pulling. Also, I think only Silverliners operate on the Doylestown portion.
Is it true that the trains normally run at capacity, like some pointed out during the Phillies Parade Pandemonium?
