Week of January 31

We have a new team member at University Hospital East, and I'd like to introduce you. This team member is a little different than most, however. In fact, this team member isn't a person -- it's a robot, a very special robot that will help our orthopedic surgeons improve people's lives.
MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing is an innovative treatment option for adults living with osteoarthritis. For patients, the benefits of this minimally invasive procedure include:
• more rapid recovery
• a shorter hospital stay, and
• a more natural feeling knee.
The robotic arm provides the surgeon with real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback so that he or she can facilitate optimal joint resurfacing and implant positioning, which results in a more natural knee motion after surgery.

The procedure also involves the use of a 3-dimensional CT scan to precisely plan the resurfacing, removal of affected bone and placement of the implant. During the procedure, the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced, sparing the patient's healthy bone and surrounding tissue. An implant is then secured in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly again.

Ideal patients for this procedure are young active adults and adults who are 65 years of age and older that are experiencing knee pain.

Currently, our physicians and staff are training to use this new technology, and we expect to see our first patient for this procedure in mid to late February. Also, watch for an opportunity to meet this new team member. And, even a chance to name it.

This is exciting for many reasons. It's a great addition to our impressive robotics program and continues to position us nationally as a leader in robotic and minimally invasive surgery. We're also the only hospital in Central Ohio with this technology. It also reinforces our commitment to personalized medicine as the resurfacing and replacement are designed specifically for each individual patient. And it's another example of how we're working to improve people's lives. Join me in welcoming this new team member at University Hospital East!

I'd also like to invite you to join me for a special Wexner Center event. The Wexner Center for the Arts presents Anna Deavere Smith, star of Nurse Jackie and The West Wing, and she'll be presenting her Off-Broadway hit Let Me Down Easy February 22--27 in the historic Lincoln Theater. That's February 22-27 in the historic Lincoln Theatre. This one-woman show focuses on the power of the body, the costs of health care, and the resilience of the human spirit, revealed through the voices of 20 real-life characters whose stories offer various perspectives on dealing with injury, illness, and mortality. As part of this event, I'll be participating in a Directors Dialogue on Monday, February 28 in Mershon Auditorium with Ms. Deavere Smith and prominent legal scholar Patricia Williams. We'll talk about the process of creating Let Me Down Easy and the past, present and future of medical care in the United States. This event is being done in partnership with our own STAR -- stress, trauma, and resilience program. My thanks to Sherri Geldin, Director of the Wexner Center, and Holly Kastan, Project Development Consultant for the OSU STAR program, for coordinating this effort, demonstrating again we are One University.
You can find more information on show times and tickets on OneSource. I'm sure the performance and the dialogue will be entertaining and thought provoking for all of us.
Well, have a great week!
