This past week, SparkFun production got a serious upgrade with a new pick and place machine - the Manncorp MC384. It can place up to 4000 parts per hour and has a special vision system that allows for non-contact, on-the-fly alignment of SMD components before placing them onto the PCB. It cost us just a little over $52k, but it's going to make our production process even smoother.

  • Great Industrial Music !!!

  • They should have a "Man Versus Machine" world championship contest. Find the fastest human manual pick n placer, and pit him/her against this thing :P

Winner gets a goodiebag of stuff from SF :D

  • This is so good, gonna buy myself one :)

  • Nice machine but it could be with linear servos than high pitched ballscrews!

  • @donnyab i too have the same question

  • how do they place parts on double sided boards and reflow them in the oven for that matter, are the sides placed and heated separately ?

  • big freakin table of components but still think a good ol mc-8 is better at tray placement machine. Especially spacewise

  • @anceop

i would think 250 would do the minimum melting point for lead solder is 183 Are you using lead free solder paste or the normal paste?

  • @touchwood1

thanks touchwood1 usually what is the temperature of reflow oven? about 250 degree centigrade?

i am asking this because i have some solder paste and i want to solder some smd components so i want to know the temperature to set in my hot air machine.

  • @anceop

What happens (usually) is solder paste is placed on the solder pads on the pcb

then the pick and place machine puts the components on the board

then it goes in a reflow oven where the solder paste melts to for the connections

  • fast response

  • @haarvey919 There are quite a few components on that machine. Take a look at all the cartridge feeders on the side. Each one of them is pretty sophisticated in itself. I'm sure they could come up with something but you better have a hell of a lot of time to dedicate to building one.
