North Korea Now a Serious Threat to South

North Korea says it has deployed new missiles to hit more parts of Asia and has improved its ability to attack the South. Heres more.

STORY:
The communist North could also test-fire its longest-range missile by the end of this month. The missiles may be designed to strike U.S. territory. But the missile tests have never met with much success.

South Korea's defense ministry says the North has deployed a new mid-range missile. It can travel up to 3,000 kilometers to hit Japan, and threaten U.S. military bases in Guam.

[Shin Won-shik, S. Korean Defense Ministry]:
"We wrote North Korea's threats such as its conventional mid-range missile deployed for combat in the paper based on actual facts. Compared to the past, we expressed North Korea as a serious and direct threat so that our people can recognize the North's substance.

In a paper released by the South Korean defense ministry, North Koreas weapons development is a direct and serious threat to South Korean security.

The paper says the North has nearly 1.2 million troops and the number of its special warfare soldiers is totaled at 180,000.

The paper also says the communist state has produced about 88 pounds of plutonium. Experts say that is enough for at least five nuclear weapons.

If the North's long-range missile launch is successful, North Korea will have a missile designed to carry a nuclear warhead that could hit U.S. territory.

This would, for the first time, pose a direct security threat by the North to the United States.
