Exactly! People don't understand the Free Exercise Clause and the Establishment clause. The first says that you can practice any religion you want; the latter says that the US can't promote one in the public square.

Article 6 of the Constitution says that "all treaties...shall be the supreme Law of the Land." The treaty of Tripoli says that "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." Case closed. Google it people. Not difficult.

It is arguable that separation of church and state was intended so the state would not control the church, not the other way around. If people say it enough times people started to believe a more single-minded interpretation, one that allows the separation of church and state as a way of kicking the church out of the state, but at the same time controlling the church through regulations and law.

At the time of the constitution, not many people were that religious... religion wasnt a significant influence in most people's daily lives. Nor did the people of the time want to have any religious influence, realizing you cant have a decent, civilized society with religion having a voice.

Not in the distant past for the framers of the Constitution was the hegemony of the Church of Rome and more locally, the Church of England. Today we have the tyranny of Islam in the political structure of Iran as just one good example that supports our idea that our founders wanted to establish separation of church and state as protection against church control of the government.
