IntelliScan is a compact and efficient mobile indoor-scanning platform for 3-dimensional mapping and visualization designed to improve upon commercially available systems which are large and need sophisticated sensors for localization. Its design integrates mobility, navigation and scanning functions thus making it both power and cost efficient. IntelliScan is equipped with a 3-D Light Detection and Ranging(LIDAR) system with high-definition video image acquisition to create realistic and dimensionally accurate maps of the environment. Unlike existing models, the robot can operate indoors as it does not rely on global positioning infrastructure. The robot works with inexpensive off-the-shelf position encoders because the system uses a 3-D map stitching methodology that does not require precise localization; data from multiple scans are combined to generate a realistic 3-D point cloud of the environment used for model development. The real-time visualization provides even the smallest detail and therefore can be used for a variety of engineering and architectural applications.
