NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., delivers keynote remarks during the 2012 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting on January 24 in New Orleans, La. Though science has taken us a long way toward more accurate and reliable forecasts for a number of weather phenomena, improvements in science and technology are only part of the equation for protecting lives and property. NOAA's Weather-Ready Nation initiative seeks to not only improve forecasts, but integrate the social science research from pilot projects to operations to understand human behaviors during the time leading up to and during these events.
