The camera man must have been one stealthy bastard. He never got shot and took pictures of both sides.

@shadowmare97 It was Ypres that we held our line and even figured out the temporary solution of putting piss soaked rags over their faces to nutrilize the gas. We also took and held Paeshchndale longer than any other allied nation.

Interesting information to destroy common clichés, thanks!
Remark: It is quite possible to be altogether an incompetent general or a light-hearted aristocrat AND to be killed on the front. As for aristocrats, they had perhaps the highest casualty rates in all European armies, as their sons were typically junior officers and the first to go over the top ahead of their platoon (precision: I am not an aristocrat!)

More British Generals were killed in action in WW1 than WW2 - yet its WW2 that has the image of the general leading from the front. The public perception of generals as incompetent aristocrats miles from the front line and ignorant of the suffering of ordinary soldiers just isn't borne out by an analysis. That image is more a function of the highly politicised 'history' of the 1960s.

yeah well the Canadians were the frontline infantry for the allies

They also took Vimy ridge from the Germans when neither france, nor Britain (The ranking world superpowers at the time), They held the line at the Somme (I think it was the Somme) against a German gas attack when everyone else retreated, and provided most allied nations with the raw materials required to wage war.
We certainly played our part firstgovs, it wasn't "Just" because we shot down the red baron

Very true, shadowmare. Imagine that these generals were in their 50s or 60s, and had to manage unprecedentedly huge masses of soldiers and of equipment, with complete novelties as the aeroplane, the wireless, guns shooting at ranges 10 times longer than when these men had entered the army...
u wimp, "innocent people", it was Turkey that started aggressions against the west
