We have a real banger for you this time! This is what happens when poor diet and poor social skills combine!
For those who read the description before asking how we did it, this is for you!
1 - First, it should be a sticky bomb for maximum effect. Put a couple in one spot and crouch over them (to hide them) and wait for a crowd to gather. Detonate! Press F2 to save the clip!
2 - Edit the clip by placing three markers, one at each end and one right before the explosion starts (the frame before the rocks appear) Press F6 to save the clip.
3 - In the timeline view, select the clip you just edited and press CTRL+C to copy. The pointer turns into a vertical bar that you position where you want the new clip to be. Press CTRL+V to paste it. Press F6 to save the video.
4 - Go into the first clip and drag the end point to the middle, erasing the last marker and making the middle one your new end marker. F6 to save.
5 - Go into the second clip and move the shuttle to the middle marker and then use the Up-Arrow to move forward TWO FRAMES. Press 'M' to create a new marker. Drag the beginning of the clip to the new marker so the original middle clip disappears, making the new one the first marker of the second clip. Press F6 to save.
What we've accomplished is to neatly remove the two frames responsible for telling the GTAIV Editor to render an explosion at the beginning of the second clip. It still knows the people and objects should fly around but it doesn't render the smoke and flame!
It should be said that the shots can be as complex as you wish, with camera rotation and movement or whatever you like. As long as you start with one complete shot that does show the explosion, you can create one complete shot without the FX. You do have to take a look at your markers before saving the clip for the final time (to make sure they aren't still set to be a middle marker instead of the end, for example)
cool but how do you do it?

@hamishmckee If you look just below this video's window, on the right hand side right next to how many views it has, there's a button that looks like 2 upside-down chevrons that drops down a bigger description box where I go into SERIOUS details!
