Shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, a 19-year-old woman in the 5900 block of Abbott Avenue near the eastern Edina border was confronted in the alley behind her house. The suspect: a 30-35 year old black man who demanded money. The woman said she didnt have any money and the suspect then struck her in the face.

The man fled west on foot and was described as about 6 feet tall, 210-230 pounds, with a slight beard. He was wearing a dark blue or black hooded jacket, dark baseball hat and smelled of alcohol, according to the Edina Police report.

The Edina Crime Prevention Fund is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the apprehension, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the attempted robbery.

Several Eden Prairie-based companies won Tekne Awards from the Minnesota High Tech Association at an Oct. 22 ceremony.

Starkey Laboratories won the Medical Technology Award for its recently announced Sweep Technology, which uses the same technology as an iPhone and allows users to change the volume on their hearing aids by swiping their finger across the back of the device. Starkey also won the award last year for its Zon hearing aid.

Digital River CEO Joel Ronning won the Executive of the Year award for an established company. Bob Switz of ADC was also nominated for that award. VISI Inc. CEO Mike Sowada was a finalist for that award in the small and growing category.

Eden Prairie businesses swept both categories of the Technology Services Award. Access Genetics LLC. took home the Tekne for small and growing companies and XATA Corp. won for established business. Eden Prairie-based Logic was also finalist among established businesses.

2009 marks the tenth year for the Tekne Awards, which are given to recognize innovative high tech companies and educators.

Halloween is Saturday, in case you didnt know. And also of note, its the end of daylight-saving time. Yes, thats saving-time, singular. Youre saving daylight, not savings daylight. And you dont really save any, you merely shift it back from the evening to the morning, but thats another story. As of 2 a.m. Sunday, turn back the clock one hour. And please drive safely.
