Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., endorsed Barack Obama for president shortly after noon today, focusing on his hope to end the Iraq War. "As people all across this great nation know, I have been one of the most outspoken opponents of the Bush administration's misguided war in Iraq and its saber rattling around the globe," Byrd said. He said he had "no intention of involving myself in the Democratic campaign for President in the midst of West Virginia's primary election. But the stakes this November could not be higher." Byrd praised both Obama and Hillary Clinton, saying their "integrity, honor, love for this country and strong belief in our Constitution I deeply respect... "Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support," Byrd concluded.

  • Anyone who doesn't like Robert Byrd has obviosly never lived in WV. He has done a hell of a lot for this state.

  • Wake up and smell the coffee, man. He HAS given up his Klan ways. Senator Byrd has said time and time again that he regrets that part of his life, and he has become one of the Klan's staunchest opponents. He didn't endorse Obama because he's black. He endorsed Obama because he knew Obama and his message of change were what our country needed (and still needs) to get back on track. And history will prove him right, just like it proved him right on Iraq.

Are you a Afro-African "black" individual?

  • @Dangerdoom68

It's basically true that a lot of people in this country complain about racism (though it parts of the country it does such as where I live, the Golden State, has a ton of racism).

If they don't like this country, they should leave. We don't need to keep hearing their complaints because they're just holding themselves down by making themselves a victim. Nobody's a victim in America, nor should they be.

  • @pdfuster

Nah not really. He was still a hard core racist. You don't know what goes on in that senate when the cameras are off.

  • @Hockeyfan8311991

Yeah such as being head of the KKK. Hey Mr KKK lover please I know why I don't like Mr. Byrd of the KKK.

  • @Dangerdoom68

Did I say anything like that? Quit putting words in my mouth and playing the race card. You jsut prove that the libs are the first to make racial issues out of every thing. If any one is the true racists, it's the progressive democrat party. The progressives are who keep the black community and Hispanic community down and stimulate the victim mentality that his been wrought forth by these Socialists.

I also said if you don't like America why stay, is the basic summary.

  • @Mage13246

Are you suggesting for Afro-African "black" People of West sub-Saharan slave kin ancestry to migrate back to Africa? Do you really believe they wish to relearn & embrace their Indigenous Afro-African "black" language, religion, culture, food cuisine? I don't believe they do!

They have it made here and they love speaking English and embracing Euro-Western culture!

As for "Hispanics", well, that's a complex subject because many racial groups can be labeled as "Hispanics"...LOL!

  • Hi Hockeyfan I from WV and I never supported Byrd. I guess I can think for myself and not vote for a man that my parents told me to vote for. which is a very common thing that happens in WV.

  • Only a handful of the southern politicians who opposed civil rights back in the 50s and 60s are left, (though fortunately Byrd gained the good sense to renounce such attitudes)

I know former Alabama Gov. John Patterson is still alive. Are there any others? And have any said anything in recent years about their attitudes of the time?

  • Wow.....we give over 90% of the black community their bottle and they still scream RACIST when Obama is president. Im sick of these 2yr old baby liberals and the blacks who voted for Obama and the hispanics who also voted for him. True racism comes from the black and hispanic communities judging by the comments I am reading. The people in the black and hispanic community want less racism....but they keep raising the racial tension....IF YOU DO NOT LIKE AMERICA GTFO WE DON'T NEED YOU HERE!
