The InstantOn mode is actually Linux. But Sony don't mention the word 'Linux' anywhere at all. If they said Linux, people might think its for geeks and nerds.

It's not the PS3's XMB, it's just XMB. It is used on high end Bravia's, the PSP and PS3, PSX, and some Vaio laptops like this.
