CARDAS / NUS SCOTLAND DRINKING AGE PROTEST

Video footage of the CARDAS / NUS Scotland public protest against the Scottish Government's plans to raise the minimum purchase age for alcohol in off sales from 18 to 21.

The protest took place outside the Scottish Parliament at 9.15am on Thursday 2nd October 2008. Over 100 people turned out for the demonstration, and were supported by the leaders and MSPs of each of the opposition parties represented in the Scottish Parliament (Annabel Goldie; Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, Robin Harper; Scottish Green Party, Iain Gray; Scottish Labour Party, and Tavish Scott; Scottish Liberal Democrats).

The protest took place in the run up to a 10.25am Scottish Parliament debate on a motion rejecting the purchase age increase; tabled by the Scottish Conservatives and backed by all the other opposition MSPs. The motion was backed overwhelmingly by a vote 72 to 47 (the SNP had 47 MSPs).

This vote followed months of intense lobbying by the Coalition Against Raising the Drinking Age in Scotland (CARDAS), whose members included NUS Scotland, the Scottish Youth Parliament, and other youth and student representative organisations including students associations across Scotland.

As part of these lobbying attempts CARDAS met with representatives from the Scottish Government, and the opposition parties. The coalition also submitted and gave evidence on a petition with 10,000 signatures, delivered thousands of lobbying letters to MSPs from concerned constituents, and developed a 67 page consultation response.

  • Would this mean that only alcohol from shops would be raised to 21? An 18 year old could still drink in a bar and nightclub? Has the age been raised in Scotland???

  • @venomousspiderwookie Last i checked a beer a day is actually healthy where a whopper a day is not so why dont you fags go picket Mcdonalds

  • @ilovemesomechicken

Well with such a profound and eloquent argument like that, how can any one disagree?

  • @tatomuck18 STOP BEING A CUNT YOU FAGGOT

  • IT should be raised to 25. Your brain is NOT fully developed until age 25. Theres way to many kids drinking. and it needs to STOP. Make the laws much more strict and enforce them. Do you really want HIGH SCHOOL KIDS drunk??? And DRIVING ON TOP OF THAT

    NO!!!

  • the drinking age should be at least 21 maybe more teens now days are way to young and immature if they want to do adult things like drink then grow up and act like an adult

  • You need another Decleration of Independence. The United States claims to be the freest nation on Earth yet in America a Legal Adult can be prosecuted for consuming Alcohol.

    which is WRONG

  • I seen in tescos a new message beside the booze "Under 25? Don't be offended......" is this a start of them trying to bring in the under 21 law?

I am an SNP supporter but if they manage to get this law through then i can nevr forgive them, although i'd still be backing independence I most certaintly would not be backing the SNP, sorry Kenny MacAskill but you just don't get it young scots will just go down to england 2 gt booze meanin tht scottish retailers lose out!

  • raising the drinking age would not solve underage drinking atal!! it would cause riots
