A tribute to what could have been the most powerful engine in the world.... Still some people consider them a failure... I dont I thing they where a success but if the would have got the "H" engine in them they would run for ever on any railroad.... Imagine if BN would have bought them and not merged... BN would probably be the biggest or 2nd biggest Railroad of all time.
Anyways I love these engines
song is "Everything's Magic" by Angels and Airwaves
I have no copyright on these photos the people that took them have all the copyright's

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the SD9043MACs still owned by UP?

  • @dajara521 I think they are, I still see vids of them running around when they were "retired" but they are still running and will be for a couple years

  • GE also had a 6000hp loco, the AC6000.

  • @BNSFandSP Ya but they look so much like the AC4400CW's

  • Some of those were SD70ACes.

  • Nope all of them where 90's some may have had ACe's with them but all pictures are sd9043MAC's and sd90MAC's... because the 90's did not have American flags on them. the ACe's have Flags or painted in heritage units and dont have We Will Deliver so all the units feautered are 90's

  • @SP4449BN9444 I think CP runs 4 of them

  • @JetMechMA

Trust me and stay with aircraft. That is what I do now and what I did before the railroad.

  • @pdlip1

For example, you were on duty for 10hrs on a train. You get 8 hrs rest. You can get a call from the crew callers to be on another job at the end of that 8th hour with a call 1.5-2hrs before the on duty time. You don't have much of a life and the divorce rate is high with train crews. Most railroads are union, with either the UTU or BLE. They only railroads I have seen that are not are short lines. One company for example is WATCO who owns shortlines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and MO.

There is no work week or regular hours unless you hold a Yard job or local that has a regular schedule with normally set hours and set days off. Regular road turn positions and extra board position are on call 24/7. You could be called for a train at 2am or 2pm with a maximum or 12 hrs on duty. If you work on a train less then 12hrs. You get a minimum of 8hrs rest. Of you on the train for 12hrs (on the law) you get a minimum or 10 hrs rest. You can call back on your rest.

  • @pdlip1 What is a work week like for an engineer? You drive the train for 8 hours or longer, and then get off. You get your crew rest at a motel, I assume, and then get on another train going back the way you came. Is that right? ...back towards home? 5 day weeks with two days off? Do you bid routes and is there a difference in routes? I assume you bid long haul or local. Are all engineers unionized?...or are there some major companies with non-union engineers? Thanks.

  • Wait a minute, why do some of the locos pictured NOT have the distinctive EMD drop down window corner? Some are straight across. Is that a mistake? Are those really GE units?

  • Also I got pics somewhere of 8506 brand new and not running pulling into KC on a train I was operating.

  • I got to operate both 90-H's and AC6000's before they went away. UP used to put them on stack trains between LA and CHicago on LBCHT and CHLBT train names. I operate a bunch between KC and Chicago. Trains had 2 HP per ton. Never had issues with these engine but heard it from others. It was funny having to pull back the throttle on a .75 grade as we accelerate past the posted limit if we did not.
