Dónal Óg (Young Daniel) is one of the major gaelic songs and has a number of translations ... A song of betrayal, obsession and grief -- a young girl's cry as desolate as the moonscape of the Burren

Tá mo chroí-se brúite briste
mar leac oighre ar uachtar uisce
mar bheadh cnuasach cnó tar éis a mbriste
nó maighdean óg tar éis a cliste

Many recorded versions including Caitlín Maude, Aoife Ní Fhearraigh and Noirín Ní Riain

A version in Irish (with translation) may be found in Peter Kennedy (Ed) 'Folksongs of Great Britain and Ireland' Cassell, London 1975. There are myriad versions of the song and, in fact, a book has been devoted entirely to it: 'Donal Og' by Seosamh O Duibhginn Dublin 1960.

tuilleadh ón leabhar An Duanaire (fílíocht na Gaeilge 1600-1900)

Cabhair ! Focail ar iarraidh...!
O Ochon is ní faoi sin é
Agus ní faoi [] inné ná inniu é
Agus ní faoin [] atá sa [] é
Ach faoi mo stoirín atá [faoi] mo lae

File, aisteoir, amhránaí agus agóidí ab ea Caitlín Maude. Cailleadh í i 1982 agus í 41 bliain d'aois. Ba chailliúint mhór í dá teaghlach agus don tír ar fad. Bhí sí ar dhuine de na healaíontóirí ba chruthaí dá raibh againn riamh.
