The adoption of GM canola in Canada between 1996 and 2004 reduced the associated "environmental footprint" or environmental impact of pesticides by 20.7 percent. Canola farmer Jeff Hoiness — who has grown GM canola for more than 10 years — discusses the environmental benefits he has realized by growing GM crops, as well as shares his perspective on foreign markets and the future of agriculture biotechnology in Canada.

no inputs, no tilling, no chemicals, no fertilizers, back to basics

  • GMO crops is the best thing that happened in agriculture in recent times. This technology in association with reduced tillage has reduced the pesticide loading in the environment by 40 - 45%. This is quite an accomplisment. The is the wave of the future. Organic farming is for birds.

  • diananana999 is absolutely right. We need to support Progressive Farmers and especially Monsanto and other biotech companies around the world because they lead the way for a better world not for "le monde selon Monsanto" which is the title of both a French documentary film and of a book, both written by a French investigative journalist called Marie-Monique Robin and published and distributed by Arte TV. All bullshit, rubbish. They want you to go back to the Stone Age. diananana999 is right!

  • Not only do organic farmers use some of the worst pesticides known to man - sulphur and copper sulphate for eg. They control weeds by ploughing the crap out of the soil, compacting it and burning fossil fuels to do it.

  • To all these organic supporters... You believe that we should save the earth by reverting back to farming practices that were used 100 years ago! All the new technologies that are available to farmers now allow for higher yeilds, using less land! Also, biotechnology in foods such as the hepatitis vaccine in the banana, or the updated golden rice with provitamin A are saving lives in countries around the world. We need to support Progressive Farmers!

  • Organic farming uses "organic pesticides" which are outlined by the USDA including lime sulfur, elemental sulfur, copper, strptomycin sulfate, oxytetracycline calcim complex, magnesium sulfate, ethhlene, sodium nitrate, and potassium chloride.

  • Organic farming uses no pesticides, seems a little better then less.

  • Agreed, GMOs are bad news.

  • What a bunch of hogwash, they'll be sorry in the long run.
