When it comes to yeast infections, it pays to do your research. The symptoms of a yeast infection in women can be deceiving to someone who isn't sure exactly what's happening. Knowing what to look for and how it's diagnosed is important when determining if you have a yeast infection. Whether you've never had a yeast infection before, or you are unfortunate enough to have chronic yeast infections, understanding the female infection symptoms is key to being able to effectively treat the problem.
The symptoms of a yeast infection in women vary depending on where on the body the infection lives. A yeast infection can occur anywhere on the body that is frequently moist and warm. This means that they can develop not just in the vaginal tract, but also in folds of body fat, the armpits, and cause infections of the mouth. Mouth infection symptoms include white patchy sores that bleed easily, and it is commonly called thrush. Thrush happens most often in those with weaker immune systems, such as babies, the elderly, or those suffering from HIV. It is painful and occurs from a reaction to many things that can cause a yeast imbalance in the mouth, such as using inhalers with steroids, having dry mouth, taking antibiotics, or even as a result of diabetes.
Vaginal infection symptoms include redness, swelling, a thick, clumpy discharge, painful urination and intercourse, and your vagina itching and burning. The intensity of the symptoms of a yeast infection in women can vary from person to person, and some may experience milder infections while others suffer greatly. It is important to note when looking for symptoms of infection that the infected vaginal discharge is not the same as a woman's normal cervical fluid, which is a beneficial and necessary component to female health. You do not want to cure vaginal discharge, only to treat the yeast infection that creates the chunky or occasionally smelly and itching discharge. The vagina burning sensation is often made worse by urine coming into contact with the swollen, irritated skin during an infection.
The frightening thing about yeast infections is that they can often be mistaken for other infections, and vice versa. Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia have the same symptoms of a yeast infection in women, and are treated very differently by doctors. It is important to see a health care professional if you think you have a yeast infection, so that they can run the proper tests to give an accurate diagnosis.
