From what I understand, originally according to Andrew Robinson, they would have been the first gay couple on star trek, but some how either the fans or network didn't take the right reaction to the first two episodes, and it became something more like teacher and student, plus a really close friendship.

We understand.. you are homosexual or bi-curious and you daydream of seeing your favorite duo in a same-sex coupling.. we understand. Now YOU need to consider for just a moment that some of us truly love the Trek series for what they actually WERE, not twisted into some homosexual wet dream. It was a wonderful show - stop trying to rewrite it please?

Andrew Robinson...the original bad guy in "Dirty Harry" and Garak. One of the best actors around and a very good writer as well.

@willisnomiko True, I don't think that anyone would ever seriously expect that their relationship would spill over into actual 'romance' but that they loved each other somewhat more than friends without it necessarily being sexual -slash storylines aside, that's something the wirters could have written endless stories about if they had wanted to. Well, that's my opinion anyway!
