Beautiful. Written by a Scot, in English and sung by an Irish Woman.

On Tuesday evening 9th December I had the pleasure of shaking the hand that wrote this lovely song. I met Dougie MacLean and his wife Jenny at The Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead where he performed a lovely set of songs before flying off to Australia. I have heard Dougie's version of "Garden Valley" on his fine "Essential Dougie MacLean" album, he obviously sings it with great feeling but acknowledged that Cara Dillon sings this song quite beautifully and had fond memories of meeting her.

Beautiful & stirring ~ provokes tears for the highland clearances, yet similarities for the indigenous population of the Hawaiian Kingdom ~ whom were robbed of their birthright to continue to be guardians of their own soil ~ & continues to affect them today. Their last crown Princess was part Scottish and am sure throughout her 8 years here during " exile " frm her islands ~ could see & feel history repeat itself for her own people back in Hawai'i ~ & homesick for her Garden valley isles

Being a Perth (Scotland) native, I now live in Japan. I've been a massive Dougie Maclean fan for more years than I dare mention, and I cover many of his songs at my gigs. I intend to do my own version of this for YouTube at some point. I have to say however that ANY version of this song will now pale in comparison with this. The best version I've ever heard, and probably ever will. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I'm now an instant fan of this girl.
