Seems like the original copyright law didn't take into account a franchise. Star Wars is still being produced, so even if it was 28 years.. Would it really be past that? Shouldn't each new Star Wars production reset the timer? So rather then begin the timer from the first publication, begin it at the last. If you have a franchise, and do nothing with it for 28 years, then it's dead and anyone can use it. Seems simple.

So true. I won't write a line of script unless it's copyrighted.

Say Disney remakes a story into a movie in 2013. Then they close down in 2044. Will the copyright end in the year that uses the formula that applies for the example you gave of J.K. Rowling?

All that assuming that copyright not be extended again. It would be naive to ever think that disney would let star wars go.

IMO, I think that unless you straight up steal something from someone else you should be able to use anything somebody else discovered or made. But yes, I understand how that can be seen as radical. This broken system just needs to be fixed, and the copyright/patent trolls going around everywhere are NOT helping.

The main reason it probably still covers scientific research is so the pharmaceutical companies can make sure they are the only ones making money from their discoveries.
