The original "Over the Sea to Skye" route before the railway and ferry arrived at Kyle of Lochalsh. From there, a Ferry to Kyleakin became the main road to Skye. The ferry was replaced by the new Skye Road Bridge a few years ago.
This small ferry from Glenelg on the Scottish mainland to Kylerhea on the Isle of Skye provides a stimulating crossing of one of the strongest tidal flows in the UK. A scenic and magnificent journey, but the approach roads are single track and a wee bit hilly, so probably not for the really faint hearted. Information: My old car with a 1300cc engine, carrying driver and one passenger, needed first gear to get over some of the peaks. Newer cars seemed to have no problem. Be cautious if you are driving a fully laden old banger.
On the Kylerhea (pronounced Kyle-Ray) side, there is an otter-viewing hide.
This narrowest of gaps between Skye and the mainland, was witness to hundreds of cattle, every year, swimming the scary treacherous waters on their way to the Lowland cattle markets.
If you are based on the Isle of Skye and looking for a day trip, you could take this road to the mainland and have a drive around. I think the fair cost about £10 UK pounds each way. Make sure you visit Plockton. If you have time on the way back, you can drive up to the Viewpoint at Kyle of Lochalsh (very rough, steep road towards the end, but you can walk the last wee bit) and take in the panorama before returning via the Skye Road Bridge.
Plockton, the Skye Bridge and the view from the viewpoint can be seen in my other videos: my nic is pixelrush.

  • Lovely video, but why have you chosen English/ West Country Music, more fitting for Morris Dancers - when we have such great Scottish tunes like "Over the Sea to Skye"????

  • @pippilottalill -- it's nautical -- I saw a cartoon in a tourist book of skye. It had a notice on a tour bus that said -- Thank you for not singing the Skye Boat Song.

  • We were on this ferry on Sunday, not scary at all.............

  • :) I have to make my vids sound exciting.

  • Been on it about 4 times, i have a video of my last trip 2007, with Terry Nutkins my girlfriend and a crazy dog on the ferry.

  • I swam over there once after missing the last ferry. I had bought a small motorbike on the mainland and had to carry it on my back. It was hard work but I made it. My white safari suit was ruined.

  • Glenelg to Kylerhea ferry. Been on it many times. My cousins John & Alastair Martin used to operate it in the late 50's.

  • Lovely video, but why have you chosen English Cornish/ West Country Music, when we have such great Scottish tunes like "Over the Sea to Skye"????

  • Sehr flott

  • Near Glen Elg is Bernera barracks, one of a chain of forts built in the wake of the Jacobite risings to remind us of our Hanovarian masters.

  • Looks like a trip to remember. I wonder how my grandfather would have crossed this body of water in the early 1800s? I shall one day travel to the birthplace of my Great grandfather Donald McLennan, who left for Canada in 1851.

  • Been there, done that :-) Great video and tune :-)
