The mirror defense,made for the wishbone triple-option,first appeared in this game. It really baffled Texas.You'll notice the long runs by Texas were up the middle,not on the corners. Ara Parsegian took credit for this defense after his 1971 Cotton Bowl victory.But the Notre Dame victory was not due to Ara's defensive plan.Texas had long since adjusted it's triple option for this defense.Texas had more offensive yardage against Notre Dame in 1971 than when they won in 1970.Texas fumbled 6 times!

ND stopped nothing. check the yardage totals. UT's fumbles lost that game.

@thetheRedundant Notre Dame didn't have too much trouble stopping the bone in the Cotton Bowl after the 1970 season!

The wishbone is absolute greatness. With the right QB and if ran the properly way, it is unstoppable. Coaches don't use it anymore because it doesn't produce NFL ready players (particularly QB's and wide receivers). But if you're a college coach desperate for some wins, ride that 'bone!
