The music was written by Wardell Gray, and the lyrics penned after his death by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross in the late 1950s.

Lambert, Hendricks and Ross were the original artists -- especially Annie Ross. Joni Mitchell was the one who did the cover... (and Bette Midler, and others).
