These activities are to promote teamwork and fun at the same time.. colleges want social, individuals with great leadership skills. not some nerd who sits in his dorm studying all day.
I have absolutely no clue, even though I'm an HBS graduate. Back when I entered, there was none of this "fun and games" crap; we went straight to 18 hour long days of classes and working on case studies. The closest thing we had to "fun" was the big treat of possibly getting an hour or so on Satuday nights for a quick meal outside the campus!

@mikeymars its actually proven that doing creative activities helps a student understand a subject better than reading a complicated book
