Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Duo no. 1 K.V. 423 for violin and viola (summer 1783, Salzburg?)

Arthur Grumiaux, violin
Arrigo Pellicia, viola

String Duo No. 1 in G major for violin and viola, K. 423, the first of the two Mozart wrote to complete Michael Haydn's set of six for the Archbishop Colloredo, was written in the summer of 1783.

While both Mozart's and Haydn's duos give the viola lots of double stops, Mozart's duos differ in that the viola also gets many passages in sixteenths, almost in equal proportion to the violin. H. C. Robbins Landon notes in particular of K. 423 that Mozart had retained the knowledge he gained in writing the String Quartet in G major, K. 387. (the finale of which was in turn influenced by Haydn's Symphony No. 23).

The set of six was presented as all Haydn's, and Colloredo was unable to "detect in them Mozart's obvious workmanship."

By transposing the viola part an octave down and changing to bass clef, the piece is readily playable on cello. Werner Rainer edited such a transcription for Verlag Doblinger.

  • your channel is really incredible, thank you so much for all of the hard work you do!! I love too the info you post under the video! Did not know that he originally passed this off as Haydn's work to Colloredo :D

  • @17mathieu You are welcome. I post this for people like you. Anything to help spread great music. Colloredo, as you probably know, had a great dislike for Mozart. He must have felt deep down, in his miserable arrogant body, inferior to the little man.....Mozart got literally booted out of his Palace, with a kick for his arse......

  • Why don't you make some very uncommon pieces? variations for ex, like k 352, 353 or 354

  • Mr. Liszt I have a lot of music, but don't have everything. I wish!!!! Aren't those variations posted on You Tube somewhere?

  • @bartje11 I was totally kidding... :) Love the video

  • @BigBeefPackage The length of records, and the amount of music to be fitted in required the omitting of repeats. So it was a purely technical consideration.

  • @bizarrefanatic Yes, imslp or write on google "nma-online". Click on the first web that you will see. That web (in german and english) works for 2006 (Mozart 250 Anniversary). You can download, see and listen almost all the scores by Mozart).
