"Concentric Circles" is an electronic sequenced musical composition set to a strict 70 bpm tempo structure. Only analogue-modelled timbres are used, creating a meditative ambient-electronic composition with a more rhythmic edge or backbeat support. This is a longer music experimentation using multiple melodic sequences, multiple rhythm sequences and tightly synchronised to maintain correct timing. The TS-404 Software Synthesizer was used to create the initial tonal lines. Two 16-step sequences make up one pattern, each with dual-timbral and dual polyphony. This pattern was then recorded and the mono version doubled with a very small delay and panned hard-right and hard-left to produce the stereo image. This was then processed through a stereo reverb. The timbres of the TS-404 sequences used sine and pulse waveforms ring-modulated, with some timbres having FM applied to create the upper-frequency "spangles". The Hammerhead Rhythm Station supplied the rhythm backing. Two rhythm patterns set to a 70 bpm tempo were recorded and the mono versions combined hard-left and hard-right to create one rhythm pattern. Different rhythm and melodic sequences fade in and fade out to create a variety in the composition, but all strictly timed in synchronisation. The Korg R3 synthesizer is used to create the improvised organ-like chords over the sequenced melody (the sound made from two timbres tuned to non-octave intervals). The last sequence element is built up from two independent sequences, creating a cheerful disposition, almost imitating a guitar-like delivery. The imagery complementing the music uses geometric and optical designs based upon the circle motif. The designs are animated by zoom and motion paths, the foreground made from two such video tracks, delayed and using a form of negative superimposition to separate the difference between the luminance values. This top layer was then keyed over an animated colour background timed to cycle with the tempo of the music track. The result is an electronic ambient-influenced experimental music composition built from several sequenced structures, comprising a variety of rhythms and melody lines.

  • is the Korg R3 not capable of doing this single handedly? If not, how so? Can the R3 play multiple layers? how many?

  • The Korg R3 is a dual timbre synthesizer and can play two multi-timbral sequences simultaneously with MIDI, or an arpeggiation and an accompaniment. With multi-track layering, yes, the R3 could this, you are right.

  • nice Track!

  • Many thanks,

This was quite a complex track, with many different sequences interacting.

  • I like this!!

The opening beat reminds me of OMD's 'Talking Loud and Clear', but that's where the comparrison ends.

It's a good track with a solid beat driving it.

    Good work.

  • Very impressive work my friend ! ! !

Loved the overall texture of this composition, really comes alive. Excellent use of analogue equipment ! ! !
