Ice Boat

It was a great day for ice boating on Lake Winnebago in Neenah, Wisconsin. The ice conditions and a steady wind made for a fast day of sailing with speeds approaching 50mph. The ice boat is pilote...

I was going about 40 mph. The fastest I have gone was close to 100 mph in winds of 25-35mph. Thanks for your comments.

how can it be that an air driven monohull can be by far faster than the air flow that provides the push?cannot figure out..perhaps u r mistaken?

Great question - the air flow that provides the push is the true wind, the speed of the boat adds "boat wind" and the combination is the apparant wind which is what provides the " push" or lift - imagine sailiing in 20km of wind at 90deg from true - as the boat speeds up (with min. friction on ice) you're app wind increases and increases, moving forward as well so you're actually creating your own apparant wind and going faster and faster. Works on water too but less exaggerated. cheers

Yes, the season can be very short or not exist! This year we are snowed out with about 16" of snow on the ice. Hopefully it will be better next year. Thanks for your comments.

DVE Sam,
Thanks for the comment. This year we are snowed out with about 24" on the ground. Ice conditions like on the video don't happen very often. 1cheesehead
