@sharkring Mason himself told me he hated the trumpet section and that it was Mike Post's idea and he never plays it when he's playing solo. He said he only plays it at all because it's expected as part of the overall piece. Also, as a note, the trumpets being off-key is more likely to be caused by phasing in the studio and other issues. When several instruments are all playing the same thing, the sound waves often cancel one another out. They didn't know how to handle that well in 1968.

Despite the fact that they sound quite good. I was surprised too hear this played in a church.
