from a lecture I gave at the University of Utah's School of Art and Art History on April 3, 2007.
The lecture was partly inspired by the history of the venue itself; Robert Smithson lectured at the U of U in 1969. Smithson gave a deadpan, mock-scholarly narration of his slides of a dilapidated motel in the Yucatan. While not well-received by its original audience, the audio recording and slideshow have since been transformed into "Hotel Palenque," a "multimedia installation" artwork, which is now in the Guggenheim's collection.
