GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo has announced that it is presenting new economical diesel variants of the C30, S40 and V50 in October at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The models are based on the Volvo C30 Efficiency that was unveiled a year ago in Frankfurt.
The 1.6D DRIVe vehicles achieve optimal efficiency with reduced air resistance, higher gear ratios and a more efficient driveline. Specifically, the cars will ride 0.4 inch lower and feature new aerodynamic panels as well as lower-friction transmission oil.
The S40 and V50 with the 1.6-liter diesel engine will achieve fuel economy that is the equivalent of 52 mpg, while the compact C30 will get 53 mpg, Volvo says.
"Taken together, all the small adjustments have helped us achieve our aim [of] emissions below 120 g/km for all three carswithout in any way compromising driving properties or comfort," said Magnus Jonsson, Volvo Cars senior vice-president of research and development.
Volvo expects to sell 20,000 of the 1.6D DRIVe units next year in Europe, with France, Sweden and Spain accounting for most of the sales. The package will cost the equivalent of $200 to $630 depending on the model, and will be available before the end of 2008—but not in the U.S.
What this means to you: Volvo's new 1.6D DRIVe models satisfy Europe's need for more mpg. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
Just a few comments. In Eurpe governments acually PAY for you to buy low CO2 emission cars. The S40drive beats the Prius in many way, from out of town fuel consumption to practicability and style. Diesels are not competitve outside Europe, because they are closed out by protective regulations (US and Japan). Likewise the EU rules support additionally the diesel cars to make use of the technological advantage of european manufacturers.

with respect for Volvo, "drivE" by Volvo is not concerning so much with ecology and enviroment; it's just marketing strategy to involve people to by old cars..!

Good cars. Why aren't these turbo-diesels available in the USA? Why doesn't Ford and other automakers manufacture efficient vehicles in the USA? Why aren't automakers commercializing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)? Why doesn't Volvo diversify into wind energy, photovoltaics and biofuels?

Volvo was stuck in a hard place in choosing either to be a luxury brand or to be a normal brand. Causing many people to see them as too expensive but not luxury.
With the current financial crisis this may actually help them a bit (relatively) because it appears the market has made a choice for them. Volvo you are a VW/Toyota/Peugeot/Citroen/Opel/Ford competitor so price yourself like it. Love the designs.
