Holy crap the real Maria has echo's of Michael Jackson's dad.

While in the USAF, I was stationed at Griffis AFB NY in 1961. My room mate told me about the Brodway musical of Sound of Music and he had a 33 1/3 rpm record. He also had seen the Von Trapp Family singers and had a LP record of their songs. He drove me crazy playing a DOM song and then playing Von Trapp record for comparison.
What I remember most was the Von Trapps had beautiful harmony, BUT their songs were not very "exciting". Even the broadway SOM was not as perky as the movie version.

My gammie told me when I was younger that her mother was friend's with Maria Von Trapp back when they first came to america

Every "based on a true story" movie has to be taken with a grain of salt. Considering it's "based on" you know that not everything is going to be accurate. If they had portrayed Maria as she really was with her quick temper, audiences wouldn't care about her as much as they do. Sad but true. Even with the knowledge of the inaccuracies, i love the musical and film and always will!

@PeterPiper00 They pretty much switched the roles of the Captain and Maria for the musical, didn't they? :) However I'd have to disagree with what this vid says about her not loving Georg. I've read 'Maria' and she says that while she didn't love him at first, she grew to love him dearly. Maria does own up to everything she did and even regrets the way she acted. I actually think the real story is just as, if not more exciting than the musical.

(continued..) Maria mentions this in her book. The information about her temper came from interviews with several of her children over the years, and is not something that someone made up who had no idea what they were talking about. In fact, even Maria herself alluded to her hot temper in her 1973 book, 'Maria'. The true story of the von Trapps is a fascinating story but it's not some kind of fairytale where everything is perfect.

In real life Maria was known to have a volatile, even violent temper. She was said to be domineering as well. She wouldn't let the children have their own lives, kept the family constantly on the road, touring in a bus for 9 months of the year. When her 29-year old daughter wanted to get married, Maria locked her in the room, forcing her to escape out a window and elope. One of the 18-year old daughters had a nervous breakdown and was found wandering the woods in Vermont. (cont'd)
@Helicon2112 He does sound a bit like Daffy Duck. You'd think they'd have gotten someone else to narrate that bit.

continue: then the innocent person reacts and starts to become angry too, starts to say ugly things to. Can you SEE that now the innocent person who was wrongly accused has become an angry person himself? And so an endless downward spiral of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth has begun. If someone accuses you wrongly, the ONLY way to keep out of this spiral is to stay completely unattached. Don't react. 'when the dog bites, just think of a few of your favorite things' Turn the other cheek.
