http://www.ted.com Journalist John Hockenberry tells a personal story inspired by a pair of flashy wheels in a wheelchair-parts catalogue -- and how they showed him the value of designing a life of intent. (From The Design Studio session at TED2012, guest-curated by Chee Pearlman and David Rockwell.)

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate

I hope this doesn't sound wrong, but when I watch this, what saddens me as much as anything is knowing that videos like this are readily available on YouTube and other places, yet too many people still sit down in front of their TV to watch the cable news shows.

He's agreeing with Plato. He's says "Got that wrong, didn't we?" As in, the US got it wrong because the politicians WANT to govern, no wonder our government sucks balls.

Referring back to his theme of intention in design. In one way he's arguing, Pluto understood the relationship of design (of the state) and intention (of the politicians). If one follows the video, you may realize by deduction, you misunderstood Hockenberry.

53 thumbs up? It's like no one even watched the video.

I'm a big fan of Mr. Hockenberry's. His memoir Moving Violations is amazing and quite relevant to politics today.

Ty for sharing the Khan Academy! A great opportunity for us all to learn and grow. Sadly, people will sit in front of the t.v. and mindlessly be programmed by the media network biases,& intentional ignorant behaviors of sitcom actors that make us look stupid. Most Americans live their lives though this medium, as start emulating them. Communities would thrive if people put effort in watching shows that inspire, instruct, and provide ideas to rebuild the American mindset and general well-being.

People are even still complaining about our poor education, yet there is a website called Khanecademy in which you can simply jump on and start studying as if you were in a classroom...FOR FREE. I learn Algebra and Triginometry from that website as I was also studying Introduction to Object Oriented Programming as well as circuits and engineering from MIT Open Courseware, also free.

The human race is suffering because too many of us are lazy.

John I have enjoyed your work over the years. After documenting the experiences of PWD and travelling through 50 countries, I am now at UC Berkeley. Through this all, I lived my life with design and intent. I INTEND to meet you in DC or NYC at the end of October. Shoot me a message when you have a chance.
